Sugar

Per my co-worker's suggestion, I watched a film called "The Sugar Film" on Amazon Prime. The film brings to light the added sugar in our foods. The first wow moment… if all foods with added sugar were removed from the grocery store, 20% of the "products" would remain. Wow! He guy in the film tracked his sugar. He didn't eat candy, ice cream, donuts, etc., just regular food, and he logged about 40 teaspoons of sugar a day, if not more! In shock I looked at 3 items in my home. My favorite cereal is Frosted Mini Wheats. I also have mini bagels on the counter with strawberry cream cheese in the frig. Occasionally, I buy a vanilla latte from Starbucks. So if I ate a bowl of Frosted Mini Wheats, 1 mini plain bagel with cream cheese, and had a grande (medium) vanilla latte for breakfast, that would be just over 14 teaspoons of sugar! Without the latte, still 6.5 teaspoons of sugar. 😲 My daily intake of sugar (or more than the daily intake depending on the source you read) with three items! Add maybe BBQ chicken and mac n cheese for lunch or dinner, and who even knows how many more “teaspoons” of sugar that entails.

Once or twice before, I counted calories. Now I see that the calories aren’t the culprit, its what makes up those calories. This Power to Be challenge has made me more mindful about my food choices, and this film definitely added to my awareness. Just wanted to share…. It might be enlightening for y'all to track your sugar in a typical day. Wow, I had no idea!

When I had my heart attack two years ago I went through cardiac rehab. I learned through that process about sugars. We as women should only consume 26 grams of sugar. My prior count was off the chart! It was a game changer for me.
