Kiwi a day to keep the waking away! Are you a fan of Kiwi? How do you like to eat Kiwi.

Kiwi is another sleep supporting food!

The kiwi or kiwifruit is a small, oval-shaped fruit popularly associated with New Zealand even though it is grown in numerous countries. There are both green and gold varieties, but green kiwis are produced in greater numbers.

Kiwifruit possess numerous vitamins and minerals most notably vitamins C and E as well as potassium and folate.

Research has found that eating kiwi can improve sleep. In a study, people who ate two kiwis one hour before bedtime found that they fell asleep faster, slept more, and had better sleep quality.

You can check out one the study here: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/21669584/

Kiwis may with sleep due to their antioxidant properties suppressing inflammatory markers, their ability to address folate deficiencies, and/or a high concentration of serotonin.

Here is a quick smoothie recipe with Kiwi. You could even swap some of the strawberry for tart cherries for even more sleep support. Let us know if you give it a try.

Kiwi Strawberry Splash Smoothie
12–14 ounces water
2 scoops Vanilla doTERRA Protein
1 kiwi, peeled
½ cup strawberries
1 handful ice cubes
1 drop Lemon essential oil

This recipe yields approximately two smoothie servings (8 ounces per serving). For those who prefer a larger smoothie size for one serving, the recipe and amount of protein can be adjusted accordingly.

I’m going to try eating with the peel; I’ve never done that before. On my grocery list for this week.

Would dry Kiwi have the same benefits??? it would be nice to make trail mix with some of the nuts discussed before with the dried fruit if the dry fruit works!

This is fascinating and such a fun way to try to improve sleep. My biggest concern is that living a ketogenic lifestyle, how many carbs the kiwi has and also consuming fruit/food just before bed and how this might impact blood sugar. I still would like to try but wonder about my concerns

@jennifer the one issue that would concern me is that dried kiwi would have a higher concentration of sugar, which I don’t believe is so good especially before bed

Everyone in my family loves kiwi but it’s not a fruit I usually have on hand. Will have to add it to the grocery list! I have never tried it right before bed.

The recipe for the kiwi splash sounds great, I can’t wait to try it. I think a kiwi sounds like a great evening snack, I am going to try it and see if I notice better sleep.

Kiwi 🥝 is definitely not one of my favorites.. I have texture issues.. but I do love it in smoothies. Maybe I should have a mild simple non dairy smoothie for dinner at night instead of a meal!

Grateful for the education on Kiwis. Sounds like they have an important role to play in our everyday diet.

How can you tell when kiwi ready and how do you store? I thought I liked them but the ones I bought have been hard to get down. Not a lot of flavor and one of them the white in the middle was hard. Storing in the refrigerator.

@mlclark0208-windstream-net You can store on the counter until they are ripe and then pop them in the fridge if you are going to eat them right away. A perfectly ripe kiwi is slightly soft and has some give when you squeeze it. Use your thumb to press on the stem end at the top gently; you want some give here

@ruth-harper-gough thank you! I don’t think what we had was quite ripe!
